I’m inspired by walks in the woods; by flowers in my garden. I love rich pattern, ornate ethnic textiles and symbolic tribal adornment. Extensive travel, as well as living many years in Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Colombia, has also influenced my aesthetic. Strong form, contrast, texture and particularly the human touch are very important elements in my work.
In one form or another, textiles have been a constant thread during my artist career. My bachelor’s and master’s degrees were both in textiles. After many years creating with fibers, I turned to metalsmithing in 2000 when I took a week long class with Deborah Krupenia at Peter’s Valley. Since then, I have been primarily self-taught. I alternate between textile techniques such as cross-knitting and metal techniques such as piercing, keumboo, forging, and stamping.
Besides exhibiting in juried shows, my work has been featured in numerous publications including most recently, 500 Necklaces by Lark Books. I can be reached at rmacdou128@aol.com.
