18 Hands Gallery announces the second annual Houston Metal Arts Guild Member Show, “THE HEART OF ART” February 4-24, 2012

This show was juried by Martha Ferguson, MFA in Metals and Jewelry from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, BFA in Metals and Jewelry from Savannah College of Art and Design. Ms. Ferguson teaches Art Metals classes for Houston Community College. Her work is represented by Goldesberry Gallery and Hanson Galleries in Houston.
Thirteen HMAG members work was selected for the show, and the following are honored with prizes:

Second Place Winner: Stacey Johnson – shadow box In Bloom
Third Place Winner: Mary Rogers – brooch Amulet #9

Harold Van Pelt exhibition ‘Gemstone Carvings: The Master works of Harold Van Pelt’ is opening Oct 28th, 2011 at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, through Spring 2012. View vessels and sculptures carved from quartz, rock crystal and agate gemstones.

A gem faceting class demonstration is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 21st, 6pm, by lapidary artist Jill Rowlands Moffitt, for a fee of $19.00

Ancient Ukraine – Golden Treasures and Lost Civilizations at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, is hosting a docent led tour of the exhibit. Date: Wedn. August 24th, 2011 at 6:00pm.
Learn about the artifacts and peoples from the earliest civilization in Europe through the Byzantine Empire featured this special exhibition from Ukraine on this behind-the-scenes tour of Ancient Ukraine – Golden Treasures and Lost Civilizations with HMNS master docents. Tickets $25.00, Members $15.00.

The annual summer event of ArtHouston 2011, encompassing exhibitions at more than 30 galleries, will open Saturday, July 9. A day long event, it will be the busiest day of the year with many galleries holding evening receptions. Participating galleries include those along Colquitt, in the Museum District, the Heights and other areas. The ArtHouston July Exhibition guide will be available at all participating galleries in mid June. The ArtHouston Summer event is always free and open to the public.

Racine Art Museum (RAM) commissioned internationally acclaimed jewelry artist Arline Fisch to create this special installation for its Windows on Fifth Gallery. Bringing her work to a grand scale, Creatures from the Deep showcases Fisch’s use of knitting and crocheting techniques to create larger-than-life sea creatures made of wire.

At the Houston Musuem of Natural Science, from May 27th to Sept 5, 2011. On tour for the first time in the United States, the exhibit ДРЕВНЯ УКРАЇНА (Ancient Ukraine) – Golden Treasures and Lost Civilizations covers 6,000 years of history of various cultures that once inhabited the territory of modern Ukraine. The exhibit includes pottery and scupture, gold jewelry and other jewelry incorporating precious stones, filigree, granulation and inlays , bronze sculptures, amphorae, silver vessels, common utensils and icons and religious regalia – from the Trypillian, Scythian, Hellenist and Roman cultures, through to the Byzantine, concluding with artwork from the 11th to the 19th century.
